Costa Rica is a country known for its beautiful scenery, tropical weather and amazing scuba diving. One of the best places to experiences all of these things is Playas del Coco, also called Coco Beaches.
Playas del Coco is one of the most popular beach areas in Costa Rica because it is packed with a wide variety of wildlife and nature areas, as well as fine shopping and dining. The ocean waters around these beaches are also known as some of the best Costa Rica scuba diving areas. A vast array of marine life can be seen at these locations, and the many choices of dive sites mean that divers can easily pick a location that suits their abilities and interests.
One of the best dive sites near Playas del Coco is Puntas Argentina, which is slightly west and north of the beaches. The area around this dive site is made up of volcanic rock, which, over the years, has been covered in a stunning, colorful coral reef. Divers can view a wide range of amazing corals at this location, as well as all of the small creatures that live within the corals. Shrimp, nudibranchs and crabs are common sights. Larger creatures such as reef sharks, rays and stingrays and sea turtles are also often seen.
Another great dive site is Tiburones, which is located south of Coco Beaches. This dive site, which is perfect for intermediate divers, features dramatic volcanic rocks that jut from the bottom of the sea. Large white tipped reef sharks are the most common creature spotted here. Stingrays can also be seen hiding in the sandy bottom.
For those divers that are interested in moray eels, one of the best Costa Rica dive sites is Sopresa. Sopresa is located slightly north of Punta Argentina. Visibility at this site is usually excellent, but the currents can sometimes be strong, so it is best suited for intermediate or experienced divers. At Sopresa, huge moray eels can be seen poking their heads out from their rocky hiding places. In addition, Sopresa is well known for its large and colorful schools of tropical fish.
Punta Gorda is a beautiful dive spot, located south and west of Playas del Coco, that is perfect for beginner divers, but exciting enough for those with more experience. Here, divers can see many different types of corals, as well as several different tropical fish species. In addition, different types of sharks are common sights, and a shark nursery can also be spotted.
Another of the best Costa Rica dive sites is Meros, which is located north and a bit east of Playas del Coco. It is tucked into the beginning of Shark Bay. At this dive location, divers can spot large fish, including groupers and grunts, as well as many coral species and the smaller creatures that live within the reef. There is also a sunken sailboat that divers can explore at this location.
Cabeza del Mono (Monkey’s Head)
Cabeza de Mono, or Monkey’s Head, is a dive site named for the huge, somewhat head shaped rock that pokes up out of the ocean at this location. Monkey’s Head is north and slightly west of Coco Beaches. At this location, divers frequently spot huge schools of different ray species. Stingrays are also commonly seen. This dive site has very gentle currents, so it is the perfect spot for even beginner divers.
